No Offer Description A 3-years PhD position is available in the framework of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network FluxBEATS (https://www.fluxbeats. eu/).
This doctoral project (DC10) focuses on numerical modelling of hydrothermal plumes in the ocean using methods of Computational Fluid Dynamics.
The candidate will simulate a buoyant plume in a stratified fluid adding crossflows to mimic oceanic flows.
Large Eddy Simulations is a preferable instrument to study the dynamics of a geophysical turbulent flow at any point in three dimensions.
Changes in scalar concentration will also be tracked, to add chemical reactions in the plume dispersal and study the sedimentation of different chemical compounds.
The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in fundamental research in geophysical fluid dynamics and geochemistry.
Supervisors from the University of Helsinki (Finland) and the University of Bremen (Germany) are involved in the project, and secondments of 1 month in Finland and 2 months in Germany are planned during the PhD, as well as participation in conferences and several training events.
FluxBEATS is a recently funded MSCA doctoral training network that will investigate global elemental fluxes that control biogeochemical cycles and formation of mineral deposits at divergent plate boundaries.
It is at the forefront of current fundamental research on seabed and on-land resources and will study the magmatic, hydrothermal and biological processes from the mantle through the crust to the hydrosphere, and from the Archean to the present.
The project integrates geological observations, cutting-edge geochemical and biogeochemical analyses, data and modeling from modern volcanic systems along mid-ocean ridges and back-arc spreading centers with Cretaceous ophiolites and Precambrian magmatic suites and associated hydrothermal systems.
