This doctoral project (DC10) focuses on numerical modelling of hydrothermal plumes in the ocean using methods of Computational Fluid Dynamics. The candidate will simulate a buoyant plume in a stratified fluid adding crossflows to mimic oceanic flows. Large Eddy Simulations is a preferable instrument to study the dynamics of a geophysical turbulent flow at any point in three dimensions. Changes in scalar concentration will also be tracked, to add chemical reactions in the plume dispersal and study the sedimentation of different chemical compounds. The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in fundamental research in geophysical fluid dynamics and geochemistry. Supervisors from the University of Helsinki (Finland) and the University of Bremen (Germany) are involved in the project, and secondments of 1 month in Finland and 2 months in Germany are planned during the PhD, as well as participation in conferences and several training events. Requirements: Education Level: Master Degree or equivalent Skills / Qualifications: We are looking for a motivated applicant with a Master's degree (or equivalent) in geosciences, mechanical and environmental engineering, or an associated field, proficient knowledge of English, and strong motivation for mobility in Europe. Previous relevant experience and/or familiarity with different analytical methods, knowledge of the local language, and existing peer-reviewed publications are a merit. Specific Requirements: Good knowledge of programming languages such as Python, C, and Matlab. Some knowledge of fluid dynamics and numerical methods for fluid mechanics. Very good knowledge of English (both written and oral). Highly motivated, autonomous, and willing to collaborate with academic partners of different backgrounds.
