Posting Details Posting Number: 20244156S Position Title: Assistant Director for Faculty Writing Initiatives Position Type: Staff Location: Villanova, PA Recruitment Type: Internal/External Applicants Work Schedule: full-time/12-months Department: 932 - Research Institute Position Summary: The Villanova Institute for Research and Scholarship (VIRS) is a University hub for faculty research advancement.
Our mission is to empower Villanova's faculty and postdoctoral scholars to pursue their scholarly aspirations sustainably over their careers.
VIRS promotes faculty research success through a variety of programs, including dedicated writing support and a growing number of internal research funding opportunities.
Reporting to the Director of VIRS, the Assistant Director (AD) for Faculty Writing Initiatives advances VIRS's objectives by: Leading the Institute's faculty writing program.
Coordinating an assigned subset of VIRS's research funding programs.
Assisting with Institute communications.
Contributing to other VIRS programs and internal operations.
A) The AD serves as the lead writing consultant to individual faculty and postdoctoral scholars across Villanova's six colleges to help improve their publication and funding success.
The AD provides developmental editing and mentoring to faculty in proposal development, scholarly manuscripts, publications, career/promotion materials, and other genres relevant to faculty research careers.
The AD may also create, refine, and develop other writing programs as needed and/or appropriate to continue to evolve and grow a Villanova Faculty Writing Program.
B) Under the supervision and mentorship of the VIRS Director, the AD manages a small portfolio of strategically important and prestigious internal grants to support faculty research projects.
The AD is responsible for the smooth operation of these grant programs across their annual lifecycles.
C) In collaboration with the Director and other VIRS staff, the AD assists with Institute communications, website management, and outreach in order to present a polished, professional VIRS brand while disseminating information about the Institute programs and resources.
D) With mentorship of the VIRS director and staff, the AD supports and contributes to VIRS programs across the Institute's portfolio, such as in postdoctoral professional development, Institute-wide functions and events, internal operations programs, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities: Lead faculty writing program Provide developmental editing and writing coaching through individual writing consultations for Villanova faculty.
Coach faculty in scholarly writing projects and provide editorial review with the goal to support Villanova's increasing renown as a research enterprise.
Promote a culture of scholarship by providing and administering writing skills and supporting programming for faculty and postdocs (workshops, writing retreats, professional development) in response to demonstrated need.
Administer designated internal research grants Under the supervision of the VIRS director, coordinate all aspects of the annual cycle for assigned grant programs.
Activities include but are not limited to preparing the programs' applications and guidelines; publicizing the annual calls for applications; fielding questions from applicants and proposal reviewers; coordinating review process and committee meetings; delivering funding decisions to applicants; and executing post-award processes such as expense approval, budget tracking, award closeout, data collection, program evaluation, and related administrative duties.
Collaborate with VIRS team to represent and message the Institute through various media Contribute to maintaining and developing the Institute website, assist in crafting and disseminating newsletters and social media posts; and contribute ideas and insights for the development of new or enhanced communication tools.
Contribute to VIRS programs and initiatives across the Institute's portfolio As part of the VIRS team, assist in development, planning, and delivery of VIRS programs across the Institute's different functional areas, including internal operations and administrative initiatives.
Other administrative duties related to the functions listed above.
Minimum Qualifications: Education PhD or MFA required Job Knowledge Specialized knowledge of scholarly writing across academic genres and disciplines to coach and mentor faculty on their writing projects and increase grant proposal and publication success for faculty.
Experience working as a developmental editor or writing consultant with university faculty across disciplines on publications, grants, and other academic genres.
Good understanding of research support and University infrastructure to promote increased publication and funding support for faculty across campus.
Familiarity with the logic, function, and role of internal research grants within a University ecosystem and experience with and/or interest in developing grant coordination skills.
Knowledge of principles and procedures in at least two of the following areas: project management organizational administration academic research and/or grant funding processes budget management/expense tracking Excellent written and spoken communication skills and social competencies to liaise with stakeholders across campus.
Minimum Work Experience Minimum three years relevant experience, preferably in higher education.
Work Skills Specialized training in the process and product of academic writing.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate with other supporting units on campus.
Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with multiple stakeholders within and outside the University.
Excellent organizational skills.
Ability to work independently to promote and lead initiatives.
Ability to collaborate and work as part of a team.
Growth mindset, including a willingness to learn new skills.
Equipment Skills Knowledge of popular software such as Microsoft Office and/or the ability to learn quickly and independently.
Willingness and ability to train in and gain fluency in new software and platforms, as needed, is essential.
