Prototyping and experimenting with serverless edge computingThe Ubiquitous Internet Research Unit of IIT-CNR (Pisa, Italy) is scouting for talented university graduates.

We are collecting expressions of interest for the following research topic: Serverless edge computing. BackgroundFunction-as-a-Service (FaaS) allows programmers to develop applications as workflows of stateless function invocations.

A new paradigm, called stateful FaaS, may unlock new opportunities in the edge-cloud continuum, with a focus on cognitive and AI applications.

In this context, the EDGELESS project has developed a reference implementation of a platform for stateful FaaS, in Rust, intended for edge clusters of resource-constrained devices, available as open-source at https://github.com/edgeless-project/edgeless/. Topic descriptionThe graduate research assistant's activities will focus on designing and implementing innovative solutions to optimize resource management in such a dynamic and fast-changing environment while enabling scalability, robustness, and security, and in particular considering the stateful nature of functions composing the applications.

The solutions will be validated in simulations and testbed experiments on dedicated infrastructures. Type of prospect positionsWe plan to open positions at the level of Graduate Research Assistant on this topic.

The activities of this topic are supported by the Extended Partnership on Telecommunications of the Future (RESTART) and will establish strategic partnerships with the European project Cognitive edge-cloud with serverless computing (EDGELESS). Candidate profileThe candidate must preferably have an M. Sc.

thesis/internship in one of the relevant research areas:distributed computingedge computing orchestrationintegration of resource-constrained devices in edge-cloud environmentsHands-on experience with Linux prototypes/testbeds and knowledge of the Rust programming language are preferable but not prerequisites. IIT-CNR will open a formal call for a Graduate Research Assistant position.

The scouting process is intended to advertise the above topic in view of the call.
