Description: Call for Expression of Interest for a joint application under the upcoming Call for MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2025
The University of Genoa (UNIGE), located in Genoa, ITALY, welcomes postdoctoral researchers of any nationality, with an excellent track record, to apply for the European Commission Marie Sklodowska-Curie (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2025.
Our University has been a beneficiary of several MSCA-PF in Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.
The MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship is a funding scheme of the European Commission's Horizon Europe Research & Innovation programme, dedicated to excellent research promoting international mobility, as well as interdisciplinary and intersectoral exchanges.
The MSCA fellowship grant provides a competitive salary plus mobility and family allowances if applicable, as well as a contribution to cover research, training, and networking costs.
The research projects will have 2- or 3-year durations.
Selected candidates will be provided with special support for proposal writing and development.
The University of Genoa will organize in May the fifth edition of the Masterclass MSCA@UniGe. Selected candidate researchers will have the opportunity to attend a 2-day online intensive training and coaching course on how to write a successful proposal. This masterclass is a pathway of support to candidates and their supervisors in preparing project proposals, including prescreening activity of the draft proposals and the organization of dedicated B2B meetings, by the European Research Office of UniGe, National Contact Point, and other experts.
The masterclass will take place on May/June 2025. Research Group: The nM2-Lab was created in 2018 from the Nano-Magnetism laboratory, which was founded by D. Fiorani in the late 80s gaining a strong international reputation over the years for investigating fundamental aspects of magnetism in nanoparticles and thin film systems.
Currently, nM2-Lab is led by Prof. Davide Peddis and Dr. Gaspare Varvaro, and it aims to design and investigate functional materials engineered at the nano and micro scale, including single-phase magnetic materials, magnetic composites, and hybrid/multifunctional systems in the form of nanoparticles, thin films, nano-patterned systems, fluids, and bulk, for fundamental studies and applications in many fields including Energy, Environment, Technologies for Sensors/Actuators, Information Storage, and Biomedicine.
Other scientific interests include the investigation of natural and manmade materials for studies in the field of Cultural Heritage.
Research Project Description: Research activity is developed in the framework of Materials Physical-Chemistry investigating the relationship between physical properties, crystalline structures, and morphological features of nanostructured magnetic materials.
In particular, the activity is focused on design and synthesis by chemical methods of hybrid magnetic nano-architectures (HMNA) consisting of a magnetic nano-heterostructure (e. g. , nanoparticles with controlled morphology, core-shell and multi-shell bi-magnetic structures, nanoparticles' superstructures) suitably functionalized with specific molecules (e. g. , amorphous silica also mesostructured, zirconia, organic molecules).
HMNA are of great interest for various applications such as permanent magnets with reduced content of critical rare earth elements, advanced thermoelectric, biomedicine (e. g. , imaging, magnetic hyperthermia, and biosensors), and catalysis.
Projects: Aim of the thesis projects @Nm2Lab could be in this general topic:
Synthesis of HMNA by chemical methods (e. g. , high-thermal decomposition, sol-gel method, ball-milling) for applications in many areas including Energy, Biomedicine, Sensors, Information Technologies, Environment, and Cultural Heritage; Investigation of static and dynamical magnetic properties of nanostructured materials at different experimental times (e. g. , AC/DC magnetometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, Neutron Diffraction, Muon Spectroscopy); Investigation of Magnetic Structure and Surface/Interface Magnetism at the nanoscale; Design and optimization of permanent magnet configurations for environmental and biomedical applications of nanostructured materials. Application: An expression of interest shall be sent to Prof. Davide Peddis (******) by 5th May 2025.
Your file should contain the following elements:
For MSCA-PF 25 call (opening foreseen on 9th April 2025), at the deadline for the submission of proposals (10th September 2025), postdoctoral candidates shall have a maximum of 8 years of postdoctoral research experience and must not have resided or carried out their main activities in Italy (for European Fellowship) or in the Third Country of the outgoing phase (for Global Fellowship) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the abovementioned deadline.
