**About the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal
The Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal is an independent statutory authority established under section 58G of the Defence Act 1903 (Cth). The Tribunals role is to:
- Inquire into and determine the salaries and relevant allowances to be paid to members of the Australian Defence Force; and
- Inquire into and make determinations on prescribed matters that have been referred to the Tribunal.
The Tribunals work is predominantly determined by the matters brought before it by the parties, in particular the Australian Defence Force. To deal with these matters, the Tribunal conducts hearings as and when required.
The Tribunal is supported by a secretariat staffed by the Australian Public Service Commission.
The Tribunal consists of three part-time Members, being:
- A President, who is also a current Deputy President of the Fair Work Commission;
- A Member who is experienced in industrial relations matters; and
- A Member who was, but is no longer, a member of the Permanent Forces (although the person may be a member of the Reserves).
**About the Role
The Australian Government is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified people for appointment to the position of Member experienced in industrial relations of the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal.
Members are appointed by the Governor-General (on advice from the Hon Patrick Gorman MP, Assistant Minister for the Public Service) on a part-time basis for a term of up to 5 years.
Members are appointed to hear and determine salary and relevant allowances for members of the Australian Defence Force.
The Member experienced in industrial relations applies their extensive knowledge of, and experience with, contemporary industrial relations and economic matters to inform the business of the Tribunal, including by liaising with other Tribunal Members and the parties before the Tribunal in scrutinising complex remuneration proposals.
On appointment, the Member experienced in industrial relations will be expected to:
- Be available for Tribunal hearings and briefings in the ACT and other locations, as required by the President of the Tribunal - approximately 2-3 days per month;
- Attend physical inspections hosted by the Australian Defence Force, including overnight travel where required;
- Deal with all matters impartially according to law; and
- Liaise with other Tribunal Members and the Australian Public Service Commission on ancillary matters relevant to the administration of the Tribunal.
