The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through the FAO Strategic Framework by supporting the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems.
Organizational Setting The FAO is the specialized Agency of the United Nations leading international efforts to defeat hunger, working in over 130 countries worldwide to achieve food security for all.
OED evaluates FAO strategies, initiatives, programmes, and projects at global, regional, and national levels, generating credible evidence to inform decisions and support oversight.
The position is located in the Office of Evaluation (OED) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Reporting Lines The Deputy Director reports to the Director of the Office of Evaluation (OED).
Summary of Duties and Functions Provide technical and management leadership in the Office of Evaluation (OED). Serve as acting Director when the Director is absent. Provide strategic inputs and support to the Director of OED. Manage human and financial resources under delegated authority. Lead the development and updates of a multi-year global Learning Agenda for FAO. Oversee clearance of evaluation reports for publication. Lead innovations in OED processes. Integrate cross-cutting equity and inclusion issues in OED processes. Foster effective dissemination and use of evaluations. Strengthen the evaluation function at FAO globally. Contribute to recruiting personnel and building collaborations. Perform other duties as required. CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING Advanced university degree in a social science field or evaluation. Minimum twelve years of postgraduate professional experience in evaluations in complex contexts. At least three publications in peer-reviewed journals. Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of another FAO language. Technical/Functional Skills Ph. D. is highly desirable. Outstanding research and communication skills. Extensive management experience in evaluation organizations. Demonstrated technical expertise in leading evaluations. Knowledge of development and humanitarian response approaches. Excellent knowledge of evaluation norms and standards.
