As Pope Francis said in Laudato Si', we believe that "truly, much can be done" About this position The Director of Finance and Operations is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for overseeing and managing the financial health, operational effectiveness, and people operations of LSM. This role ensures that the LSM secretariat operates efficiently, complies with all legal and financial requirements, and has the systems and processes in place to support its mission-driven work. Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership Ensure LSM has excellent standard finance, human resource, and operation policies that reflect the organization's culture and are accurately documented, routinely updated to reflect best practices, and implemented throughout the organization. Contribute to strengthening the implementation of strategic and annual plans across the organization. Work with the Internal affairs committee of the Board and the Board Treasure on internal matters. Manage Staff Accountant, People Operations Manager, Operations Coordinator, and other staff as needed. Financial Strategy and Management Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the organization's mission and goals. Prepare, manage, and monitor the organizational annual budget in collaboration with the Executive Director, the Executive team, and the Director of Development. Develop financial business plans and forecasts, accounting for multiple grants with different timelines. Oversee cash flow planning and analysis, ensuring availability of funds as needed. Ensure development, maintenance, and updating of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures. Engage the Internal Affairs Committee of the Board of Directors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections. Represent LSM to financial partners, including auditors, bank reps, public officials, etc. Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations. Participate in corporate policy development as relevant. Accounting and Administration Oversee and as needed perform accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger management. Present monthly reports on revenue and expenses and on cash flow projections to the executive director, executive team, board treasurer, and/or other board members as needed. Respond to questions as needed. Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Coordinate and manage the annual audit process, ensuring compliance and nonprofit accounting standards. Ensure financial legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions (including grantor compliance). As needed, create budgets for grant applications and reports. People Operations Ensure organizational compliance with federal and local employment and contractor laws. Develop annual goals and set the strategic direction for the people operations team to support the development and sustainability of LSM. Manage compensation systems, ensure accurate job descriptions, perform competitive market wage analysis, and manage the salary structure. In coordination with the People Operations Manager, oversee the main human resources processes like recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance management, training, and offboarding of employees and contractors. Maintain updated HR systems, policies, and procedures on an ongoing basis. Operations Manage day-to-day operations of the global team in line with LSM's culture and values. Oversee and manage contracts and MoUs, and troubleshoot ongoing issues related to overseas offices. Proactively manage legal matters in consultation with the attorney, board, and other organizational leadership. Manage the development and needs of LSM's current and future legal entities. Maintain liability and other relevant insurance, including research, cost comparison, and broker relations. Appropriately report to relevant government agencies wherever legal entities exist (as city, state, and federal agencies in the US). Implement and monitor sustainability measures across LSM's operations to ensure the organization has a minimal ecological footprint. Oversee the management of internal digital platforms such as Slack, Zoom, Zoho, and Google. Proactively recommend and implement new changes to optimize and streamline team operations. Maintain knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in operations management. Skills and Characteristics Essential Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or any other related field. At least 8 years of experience with financial and operations management, international human resources practices, and systems development experience, particularly in international or Catholic NGOs. Good knowledge of Financial Management Strategies, and nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting. Deep knowledge and understanding of compliance audits. Good knowledge of Operational aspects of non-profit planning, management, and compliance. Understanding of grassroots, national, and international nonprofit programming and administration, including IT security, legal, data analytics, translations, and procurement. Project management, people management, and account management. Endorses and embodies LSM values and the Laudato Si' paradigm in behavior and words; comfortable supporting and working in a faith-based environment. Languages : English is essential for this role. Spanish, Italian, or French are extremely valued.
