Organizational Setting The Statistics Division (ESS), in coordination with relevant teams from FAO Technical Divisions, has supported the production of a series of reports on the impact of disasters and crises on agriculture and food security since 2015. These publications have become a central pillar of FAO's work on improving resilience in agriculture and investing in disaster risk reduction - especially through the use of better data and methodologies for creating evidence-based strategies in resilience programming. Building on these efforts, FAO launched the first edition of a new flagship publication on the Impact of Disasters on Agriculture and Food Security in October 2023. The flagship series will be produced every two years, with improved quantitative assessments of disaster impacts in crops, livestock, forestry and the fisheries and aquaculture subsectors as well as thematic policy insights for reducing disaster risk and building resilience in agriculture.
Reporting Lines The Consultant will work under the supervision of the Technical Editor of the report in ESS.
Technical Focus The Consultant will provide support to the Technical Editor and the report team to ensure the timely and effective preparation of technical material for the 2025 edition of the Impact of Disasters on Agriculture and Food Security publication. The first part of the report hosts the quantitative global analysis of agricultural production loss in agricultural subsectors (crops, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture, and forestry) attributed to disasters. The Consultant will focus specifically on the analysis and demonstration of results from this statistical assessment, while providing general support on the production process of the entire report. They will assist the technical editor and coordinator of the report to ensure the smooth preparation, peer-review, revision, finalization and clearance of the contents of the report.
The Consultant will work in one or more of the following related domains:
Disaster losses and damages in agriculture and its subsectors, including quantitative methodologies for data collection and assessment of disaster impacts.
Resilience and risk analysis, hazard and disaster impact evaluation techniques.
Relevant international monitoring frameworks and related indicators, including the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Paris Climate Change Agreement and relevant SDGs.
Food security and nutrition statistics.

Participate in the development of improved statistical tools and methodologies for disaster impact assessment in agriculture.

Support the peer-review and internal FAO clearance process for text and materials produced for the report, in collaboration with other FAO technical units involved, including contacting and liaising with relevant external parties.
Participate in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings and seminars to discuss contents of the Report, and adjust the contents based on inputs provided by partners.
Update related databases and web pages, and develop media messages.
Support the finalization of the Report in coordination with copyeditors and designers in collaboration with relevant FAO technical units.
