FAO launched the first edition of a new flagship publication on the Impact of Disasters on Agriculture and Food Security in October 2023, which will be produced every two years. Reporting LinesThe Consultant will work under the supervision of the Technical Editor of the report in ESS. Technical FocusThe Consultant will provide support to ensure the timely preparation of technical material for the 2025 edition of the publication, focusing on the quantitative global analysis of agricultural production loss attributed to disasters. The Consultant will work in related domains:Disaster losses and damages in agriculture, including quantitative methodologies for data collection and assessment of disaster impactsResilience and risk analysis techniquesRelevant international monitoring frameworks and related indicatorsFood security and nutrition statisticsGeo-spatial statistical applicationsDigital technologies for reducing disaster riskTasks and ResponsibilitiesCollect, review, and verify relevant data to support delivery of projects related to disaster impacts in agriculture. Prepare and draft content of the report in collaboration with the editor and other FAO technical units. Undertake analysis, provide technical input for plans and reports. Participate in the development of statistical tools for disaster impact assessment. Research literature and explore potential data sources. Support the peer-review process for text and materials produced for the report. Participate in organizing meetings to discuss report contents. Update related databases and web pages, and develop media messages. Support the finalization of the Report in coordination with copyeditors and designers. Support the launch of the Report. Perform other related tasks as necessary. Candidates Will Be Assessed Against the FollowingAdvanced university degree in Disaster Risk Reduction, Statistics, Economics, Agricultural Economics, or a related field; a PhD is an advantage. For junior consultants: At least 3 years of relevant experience; for senior consultants: at least 10 years. Working knowledge of English. FAO Core CompetenciesTechnical/Functional SkillsLimited knowledge of UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an asset. Experience in economic and policy analysis of disaster risk in agriculture. Authorship or contribution to analytical or statistical reports. Knowledge of programming software such as R, ArcGIS/QGIS is an advantage. Ability to manage, analyse and present quantitative information effectively. Experience working in multiple countries or regions is an advantage. Excellent report writing skills in English.
