POST CONTEXT This is a position within the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), an organization of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
CMRE is an established, excellent, scientific research and experimentation facility that organizes and conducts scientific research and technology development, centred on the maritime domain delivering innovative and field-tested Science & Technology (S&T) solutions to address defence and security needs of the Alliance.
This position is within the Engineering and Information Technology Division (EITD), which supports the execution of the Programme of Work.
EITD consists of the Engineering Department (ED) and the Information Technology Department (ITD): • ED addresses the engineering and technological requirements of the Centre'sresearch activity, by designing, developing, constructing, testing at-sea and maintaining, repairing and calibrating electronic, oceanographic, mechanical, Science and Technology Organization Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation acoustical assemblies and unmanned systems, especially prototypes, or combinations of such units as required.
• ITD supports the conception, design, development and construction of state-of-the-arttechnologies in computing, networking and data infrastructure as well as developing, integrating, and validating software applications, services and products.
All this is done while ensuring interoperability, security and compliance with relevant NATO policies and regulations.
Depending on his/her individual skills, the Incumbent will be assigned to one of the following sections, with the role of Technician: • Embedded Systems • Sonar and Marine Sensors Systems • Ocean Engineering 2.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the supervision of the Section Head or appointed activity lead, working with some grade of autonomy or participating in working groups, the Incumbent will be responsible for the provision of Technical Services.
His/her duties may include a subset of the following tasks: • Test, maintain, operate, repair a suite of COTS and prototype autonomous vehicles, sensing systems (acoustic, oceanographic, other) and marine equipment • Support development activities to enhance and exploit the use of underwater and maritime engineering equipment (e. g.
acoustic/sonar systems, oceanographic instruments and sensors, UxVs with their support equipment, embedded electronic systems, and ocean engineering equipment) • Maintain technical knowledge on developments in his/her field of expertise and operation • Under the coordination of the Software Development Team, support the development and deployment of software applications required to operate the above assets, and to acquire/process the data collected by them • Perform sanity checks on data collected by the above assets and, in coordination with the Data Management team, transfer data into the CMRE/NATO data processing/storage networks Science and Technology Organization Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation • Maintain inventory and documentation of systems in use within his/her technical Section, or operated as part of larger, complex systems of heterogeneous systems • Provide support to Sea Trials on-board Centre's Ships (or other Platforms as required), from the logistic (preparation, transport, installation of equipment) and operational (work at sea) point of view • Perform other related/similar duties as directed in order for the Organization to deal with emergent requirements (in particular, working as a member of Working Groups or 3.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND ADDITIONAL DUTIES a.
Flexibility Clause The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties even in other parts of the organization as directed.
All other related duties should correspond with the required competencies for the job.
b. Deployment/Travel The incumbent may be required to perform his/her duties onboard Centre or chartered vessels.
The incumbent may be required to undertake TDY assignments within and outside NATO c. Certification The incumbent needs to obtain a fit for sea certificate in line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Labour Organization (ILO) standards before taking up duty.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS a. Professional/Experience • Experience as technician in the development, testing, operation and maintenance of • Experience in participation in experimentation campaigns.
b. Education/Training Science and Technology Organization Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation • Higher Secondary Education Diploma in Electronics/Mechanical/Software Engineering (or equivalent fields), plus at least 2 years post-related experience • Alternatively, advanced Vocational Training leading to professional qualification or accreditation, plus at least 4 years post-related experience in the field.
c. Language Requirements A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages, both written and spoken, is essential and some knowledge of the other is desirable.
NOTE: Most of the work of CMRE is conducted in the English language.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONSA subset of the following experience and education requirements is desirable: • Completed Vocational Training, leading to a formal qualification in Post-related aspects (e. g.
AUV operator, glider pilot, UxVs or sonar maintenance, ocean engineering • Experience in operation, maintenance and testing of underwater and maritime engineering equipment (e. g.
acoustic/sonar systems, oceanographic instruments and sensors, UxVs with their support equipment, and ocean engineering systems) • Experience with some aspects of the integration of payloads on autonomous vehicles • Programming skills with one or more languages (e. g.
C++, C, Python, Rust) • Ability to customize and run SW tools for the acquisition, analysis and validation of data collected by underwater and maritime systems • Experience with embedded systems development • Experience with 2D/3D CAD software, and related manufacturing processes and technologies • Experience with circuit and PCB design applications • Experience in an International working environment • Knowledge of Italian Language, to manage day-by-day communication with local Suppliers and Contractors 6.

REMARKSThe duties are mostly performed in an office environment, but staff may be required to work on-board a vessel.

Under specific circumstances, serving staff members may be appointed directly to the higher grade, and a period of three years might be reduced by up to twenty four months for external candidates.
