Project: CALM – Computer Assisted Laser Microsurgery
Contract: Research Fellow, 12 months
Location: Genoa, Italy
WHO WE ARE The Biomedical Robotics Lab is part of the Advanced Robotics Research Line, directed by Prof Darwin Caldwell.
This large research line focuses on an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to robot design and control, and the development of novel robotic components and technologies for applications in medical, surgical and rehabilitation robotics, exoskeletons and force augmentation, manipulation and dexterous manipulators, telepresence and teleoperation, industrial automation and robotics, active perception and learning, inspection robotics, hyper-redundant robots, robot dynamics and robots for hazardous environments.
OUR TEAM THE POSITION The selected candidate will join a translational research project dedicated to the advancement of our Computer-Assisted Laser Microsurgery (CALM) technology towards clinical use.
This is a multi-disciplinary project involving engineers, surgeons and close collaboration with one of the World's leading manufacturers of surgical lasers.
The goal of this position is to contribute to the creation of a clinical grade version of our most advanced CALM prototype.
Specifically, the selected candidate will be responsible for refining the low-level control algorithms of the device and developing new firmware for integration with control interfaces and other surgical devices.
In addition, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to implement high-level controllers for autonomous functionalities, enhanced usability and improved surgical performance.
The main responsibilities of the position will include:
Design and implementation of low-level control algorithms of CALM Development of firmware for integration with new user interfaces Performance testing and validation of CALM's functionalities Development of new high-level controllers for autonomous functionalities Preparation of documentation and reports, and contribution to the writing of academic papers ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS A MSc degree in Control Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or similar disciplines Documented experience with the design and development of firmware for the control of mechatronic systems Experience with control systems engineering and implementation Strong knowledge of programming languages C / C++, Matlab Ability to properly organize, document and report on project progress Interest in medical devices and surgical technologies Availability to work in Genoa, Italy ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience in the design and development of robotic systems Experience in the development of user interfaces (hardware and software) Experience in the development of medical devices under MDR Knowledge of human factors, usability, user interfaces Excellent communication skills Strong problem-solving attitude Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment Good fluency in Italian and English COMPENSATION PACKAGE Internationally competitive salary package Wide range of staff discounts WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
