Organizational Setting: The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) works with Members and partners to transform aquatic systems and promote the responsible and sustainable management of aquatic food systems.
Reporting Lines: The Fishery Officer reports to the GFCM Executive Secretary and collaborates with relevant staff in the GFCM Secretariat.
Technical Focus: Support compliance with GFCM policies by Contracting Parties and Cooperating non-Contracting Parties.
Key Functions: Plans and leads components of multidisciplinary teams.
Develops technical, analytical, monitoring and reporting frameworks.
Designs and conducts research and data collection activities.
Responds to country requests for technical and policy assistance.
Collaborates in capacity development and knowledge sharing activities.
Promotes international cooperation and advocates best practices.
Participates in resource mobilization activities.
Specific Functions: Oversees the work of the Compliance Committee.
Leads the GFCM Compliance Team.
Participates in strategic planning of GFCM activities.
Provides compliance-related advice to the Executive Secretary.
Assists national focal points with compliance activities.
Represents the GFCM in relevant meetings.
Liaises with relevant FAO Divisions/Offices/Centres.
Contributes to the development of a modular approach to monitoring.
Minimum Requirements: • Advanced university degree in fishery science, marine affairs or related field. • Seven years of relevant experience in fisheries, focusing on IUU fishing. • Working knowledge of English and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language.
Technical/Functional Skills: • Work experience in multiple locations is desirable. • Knowledge of the regulatory framework at various levels. • Experience in advising on RFMO measures. • Experience in organizing technical meetings. • Ability to liaise with governments and organizations.
