Group Leader In Functional Genomics - Human Technopole Centre Of Functional Genomics
APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: August 15th, 2024 Human Technopole (HT) is an interdisciplinary life science research institute, created and supported by the Italian Government, with the aim of developing innovative strategies to improve human health.
HT is composed of five Centers: Computational Biology, Structural Biology, Genomics, Neurogenomics and Health Data Science.
The Centers work together to enable interdisciplinary research and to create an open, collaborative environment that will help promote life science research both nationally and internationally.
The Genomics Research Centre – Functional Genomics Programme seeks to recruit an outstanding scientist to establish an independent group at the Human Technopole Foundation (HT).
We seek a talented, preferably early-career, researcher to establish an independent laboratory at the HT Centre for Functional Genomics.
Exceptionally, we will also consider mid-career leading scientists who are considering moving to HT.
The Research Group Leaders will be responsible for developing an independent scientific programme within the Centre and contributing to the collegial development of the HT research programme.
They will be active researchers conducting high-quality, internationally competitive research and contributing to the international scientific community.
The mission of the Center for Functional Genomics will be to elucidate key biological questions, including "How is the genome regulated in each cell, tissue, and organ in health and disease", "What are the molecules and networks that drive biological activity in cells, tissues, organs", and "How to modify genome regulation and genome output in health and diseases".
We will identify and characterize functional and regulatory non-coding genomic element networks in different cells and tissues of the human body to identify the grammar of the genome, which will ultimately provide a deeper understanding of genome function and enable genomics medicine.
To address these challenges, the Centre develops original technologies to identify and functionally characterize regulatory elements, non-coding RNA, genome conformation, interactomes of biological molecules in living cells, and computational approaches to study genome regulation.
These approaches will be broadly used to map the function and regulation of the human genome in health and diseases across human diversity and ultimately derive actionable targets. In this context, the successful candidate will engage in one or more of the following areas: (1) Development of original computational methods to analyze a wide variety of functional genomics datasets profiling complex transcriptomes, non-coding RNAs, RNA modifications, RNA translation, transcriptional regulation, and chromatin conformation, aiming at extracting robust biological significance.
(2) Development and application of computational approaches for biological interpretation of genomics and multi-omics data, single-cell and/or spatial transcriptomics data, with innovative approaches, including artificial intelligence, deep learning and related approaches.
(3) Linking large and diverse datasets to decipher biological networks from genomics data, including human variation, to identify key actionable regulatory elements relevant to human diseases.
(4) Development of databases and tools to broadly analyze, display, distribute, and reuse the data produced by the Center and in collaboration with other centers inside and outside HT.
Key tasks and responsibilities The Group Leader will: develop and supervise the establishment of a world-class research programme in functional genomics.
lead their own research group.
foster a diverse and nurturing research environment through leading and mentoring members of their teams.
build effective links and collaborations with other HT research investigators.
develop and foster links between HT and other national and international research organizations.
contribute to the preparation of Centre reports to be reviewed by an external expert board.
actively participate in initiatives that pursue improvement of all aspects of HT.
actively participate in the co-organization and implementation of activities that will promote the image of HT in the international genomics community, such as symposia and workshops.
contribute to the establishment of a collaborative and open scientific environment by actively participating in meetings and seminars internal to HT.
This will foster synergies between the groups and the propagation of knowledge.
raise third-party funding.
The selected candidate will have an outstanding record in various areas of Genomics, preferably with a strong track in computational methods and/or databases development; computational biology and related areas; and interest in the analysis of human systems and diseases.
The Centre for Genomics will implement strategic internal collaboration schemes and work closely with other HT Research Centres to achieve synergies and reach joint goals.
The selected candidate will possess scientific vision and leadership skills and be competitive in acquiring extramural grants and a collaborative attitude.
