Head Of Research
Responding to the CSO, the Head of Research will play a crucial role in shaping and executing the research and development strategy, collaborating with a diverse team of biomedical engineers, biologists, clinicians, and quality and regulatory experts.
Role And Responsibilities Overseeing and coordinating research and development projects for implantable medical devices, from concept to preclinical validation. Developing innovative technologies and advanced biomaterials to promote tissue regeneration and enhance the biocompatibility of implants. Analyzing the biological interactions between implant and organism, optimizing strategies to minimize inflammatory and immune responses. Designing and overseeing preclinical investigations. Taking care of the budget, documentation, and staffing of research projects. Collaborating with Marketing and Sales to evaluate market opportunities. Delivering recurrent updates on the progress and possible obstacles facing a project to the project management team. Collaborating with Regulatory Affairs for compliance with main international requirements (MDR, FDA, ISO 10993) and supporting the preparation of technical documentation. Collaborating with Manufacturing in the design transfer of late-stage projects. Establishing strategic partnerships with universities, hospitals, and biotech companies to drive innovation forward. Supporting the Clinical Operations Team in planning and performing clinical studies. Staying on top of new technologies and scientific trends in biomaterials, tissue engineering/regeneration, and implant biology. Managing funding requests and grant projects, such as Horizon Europe, PNRR, and regional tenders. Writing peer-reviewed publications. Participating in congresses/conferences/trade fairs. Leading and inspiring the R&D team, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration.
Requirements Education: Master's degree or PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Biotechnology, Biology, or related disciplines. Experience: At least 5 years in R&D in life science, preferably in organizations with multiple clinical areas with a focus on orthopedic regenerative medicine.
Technical skills: In-depth knowledge of biomaterials, tissue engineering/regeneration scaffolds, and biological interactions. Experience with preclinical testing, biocompatibility assessment, and immune response modulation strategies. Knowledge of silk fibroin properties and processing is a plus. Knowledge of medical device quality systems and design controls procedures is a plus. Ability to present/teach detailed technical information. Familiarity with standards and regulations for implantable medical devices (MDR, ISO 10993, FDA). Ability to manage and write grant and funding projects. Demonstration of high-level scientific writing and presenting skills.
Soft skills: Leadership and ability to manage multidisciplinary teams. Innovative and problem-solving mentality. Excellent communication and networking skills. Languages: Italian (fluent), English (excellent level, written and spoken).
