In the execution of your tasks, you will work in close cooperation with other staff in the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. The Science Section is a dynamic RD team leading Earth Observation (EO) research and Earth system and climate science activities in partnership with European and international scientific groups.
You will be part of the Earth System Science Hub, a new science facility at ESA and centre for networking and scientific collaboration among world-class researchers in ESA Member States (MS) and worldwide. The Hub relies on the latest advances in open data science, cloud computing and HPC capabilities, offering a collaborative environment for advanced science and research development. Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeshipYou will focus on advancing our EO-based capacity to observe, understand and predict changes in the polar regions.
You will use state-of-the-art, advanced methods, such as novel algorithms, sensor synergy, AI/machine learning and modelling, to improve understanding of complex processes, feedbacks and potential impacts.
Priority will be given to enhancing observations and understanding in one of the following subdomains:Ice-sheet changes and their impact at regional and global scaleDynamics of glaciers and ice capsInteractions between ice shelves, tidewater glaciers and the ocean/atmosphereIce-sheet supra- or sub- glacial hydrologySea ice dynamics, interactions and feedbacks in the Earth systemYou will be responsible for various activities, including:Undertaking advanced research addressing major observational gaps and scientific priorities in EO, polar and Earth system science. Contributing to the advancement of our understanding of the Earth and climate system based on advanced EO data, models and AI. Supporting the definition, technical supervision and coordination of scientific exploitation projects carried out by external teams of experts and scientists. Maintaining a continuous dialogue with the scientific communities, including major international programmes and initiatives. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD. Additional RequirementsIn addition to your CV and cover letter, please prepare a research proposal of no more than five pages.
You should also have:Proven research experience based on the use of relevant satellite measurements. Science software development experience and programming skills. Additional Experience In Modelling Will Be An Asset. You should have good analytical and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment in an autonomous manner.
The working languages of the Agency are English and French.
