Organizational Setting The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through the FAO Strategic Framework by supporting the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind. The Infrastructure and Facilities Management Service (CSLI) within the Logistics Services Division (CSL) is responsible for the maintenance of the headquarters premises and for providing services to FAO employees. CSLI also assists FAO Decentralized Offices in facilities maintenance, technical projects, infrastructure activities and technically innovative systems to reduce their carbon footprint. Furthermore, it promotes the implementation of the Corporate Environmental Responsibility Strategy within headquarters and Decentralized Offices. The post is located in the Facilities Management Service (CSLI) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. Reporting Lines The incumbent will report to the Corporate Environmental Officer and work within the Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) team in CSLI. Technical Focus The incumbent will be in charge of conducting the annual greenhouse gas (GHG) environmental inventory of FAO, supporting the CER team with the definition of environmental action plans, as well as promoting sustainable behaviours at the workplace in line with the FAO Corporate Environmental Responsibility Strategy. Tasks and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Corporate Environmental Officer, liaise with country offices to assist in the collection and analysis of energy usage and other data for calculating FAO's greenhouse gas emissions (buildings, vehicles and official travel) and design sustainable energy systems. Research and prepare responses to queries from colleagues on environmental management issues and contribute to templates, tools, and other support materials to help colleagues worldwide to measure and manage environmental risks and impacts from our operations. Analyse emissions data of Decentralised Offices based on Regions and office size and identify offices that require most assistance with reducing their emissions. Analyse the collected data and report accordingly to internal and external parties. Support Green Focal Points in Field Offices with implementation of climate neutral measures and advocacy within the Office Management Team. Ensure best practices are shared easily between field offices, and repeated/scaled as applicable with local circumstances. Under supervision, develop environmental awareness-raising materials for use in educational campaigns, events and technical trainings that aim to drive energy-saving and other sustainable behaviours at work. Under supervision provide technical assistance to FAO decentralized offices on energy issues and other corporate sustainability activities. Under supervision assist in implementing projects for energy stabilization in the decentralized offices, including gathering data required for solar systems and hybrid systems. Assist with electrical load assessment of decentralized offices and installation of IOT sensors. CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING Minimum Requirements Advanced university degree in Energy or Electrical Engineering. A minimum of one year of experience in activities related to energy and electrical engineering with a focus on renewable energy. Working knowledge (level C) of English. FAO Core Competencies Results Focus Teamwork Communication Building Effective Relationships Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement Technical/Functional Skills Proficiency in the full Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Teams). Knowledge of simulation software for solar system design (e. g. Homer, PVSol). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Selection Criteria Knowledge of environmental sustainability, energy systems and climate change issues. Ability to perform energy audit and load curve assessment of buildings. Ability to manage data and understand GHG emission data. Ability to communicate in English within the environmental/energy sector. Limited knowledge (level B) of one of the other official FAO languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian) is an asset. Italian working knowledge is a strong asset.
