The Institute for Alpine Environment performs problem-oriented research in the fields of biodiversity, ecosystem functions, sustainability, land-use and climate change, and nature's contribution to people.
We invite applications for the position of a junior researcher for the 'Schneewinkel' biodiversity project in apple orchards.
The ideal candidate has a background in biology or natural sciences, with experience in assessing animals or plants in agricultural habitats, as well as a background in the agricultural sector (preferably apple cultivation).
The work will be conducted in close collaboration with the Association of Val Venosta producers of fruit and vegetables (VIP).
Working location is Bolzano/Bozen with fieldwork in Silandro/Schlanders (Val Venosta/Vinschgau).
The "Schneewinkel" Biodiversity Project started in 2025 and aims to create a scientific base to promote and increase biodiversity in intensive apple orchards.
It seeks to develop, evaluate, and continuously optimize successful and practicable measures while strengthening the knowledge and awareness of those involved regarding biodiversity aspects.
The project area extends over 65 to 70 hectares, located east of Silandro/Schlanders in Val Venosta/Vinschgau, characterized by fruit cultivation managed by different farmers applying integrated and organic methods.
Tasks Project coordination in close collaboration with VIP Design, implementation, and evaluation of biodiversity surveys Biodiversity surveys within the "Schneewinkel" project area Cooperation with partner organizations Project communication for cooperative (VIP) members and the general public Development of biodiversity-promoting measures Support the investigation of the agronomic impact of biodiversity-enhancing measures Requirements Organizational skills, ability to work efficiently and creatively Master's or bachelor's degree in biology or environmental sciences Experience in biodiversity surveys, preferably of insects, birds, or vascular plants Experience with GIS Background or experience in the agricultural sector is advantageous Very good knowledge of the German language; good English skills Good interpersonal and collaborative skills to integrate into a working group and interact with associated researchers and stakeholders We Offer Fixed-term contract of one year with the possibility of prolongation up to three years (full-time) Opportunity to work in a young interdisciplinary team Attractive living and working conditions (Great Place to Work)
