Organizational Setting The Legal Office of FAO ensures that FAO's activities are carried out in accordance with its Constitution and the other Basic Texts of the Organization, consistent with its status as an intergovernmental organization of the United Nations system.
The Development Law Service (LEGN) provides legal advisory and technical services to governments on food, agriculture, and natural resources, including land, water, fisheries and aquaculture, plants, animals, food, forestry, wildlife, environment, climate change and biodiversity.
The ForestLEX+ Programme—Strengthening National Legislation for Sustainable Forest Management—is an FAO-led initiative designed to support Members by providing normative, legal, and technical assistance to enhance forest governance.
The Governing for Sustainable Agrifood Systems: Strengthening Legislation and Building Capacity to Support Implementation, Compliance, and Enforcement Programme (ACE Programme) is an FAO-led initiative designed to enhance governance frameworks for agrifood systems.
Reporting Lines The Legal Specialist reports to the Chief, LEGN, with day-to-day supervision provided by a designated Legal Officer (LEGN).
Technical Focus Legal research and advisory services to governments on forestry legislation, sustainable forest management, forest governance, biodiversity protection, and related development law issues.
Tasks and Responsibilities Provide legal advisory services to FAO Members on forestry legislation. Support awareness-raising and capacity-building initiatives. Assist in the drafting of legislation related to forest governance. Conduct legal research and analysis on forestry-related legal frameworks. Identify synergies between forestry legislation and related areas. Provide technical inputs to legal assessments and policy recommendations. Contribute to FAO's engagement in global and regional initiatives. CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING Advanced university degree (LLM) in law with demonstrated academic work or research in relevant fields. At least one year of relevant legal work experience. Working knowledge (proficiency - level C) of English. FAO Core Competencies Technical/Functional Skills Strong knowledge of legal issues related to forestry governance. Experience in developing national legislative measures. Legal drafting experience. Ability to conduct legal research and write clear legal texts. Experience working with international organizations on legal frameworks is an asset.
