Offer Description Introduction to the vacant position:
We offer a 3-years PhD position in the framework of the Horizon Europe MSCA-Doctoral Network "Autonomous Scanning Probe Microscopy for Life Sciences and Medicine powered by Artificial Intelligence (SPM4. 0)".
This project is funded by the European Union (GA: 101168976) and will involve 16 PhD positions distributed in 10 research centers/academic institutions and 3 companies from Spain, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic and UK.
The SPM4. 0 Project:
Artificial Intelligence is pushing forward the Industrial Revolution 4. 0, transforming many areas of Society, including Science and Technology.
Nanoscopy is among the areas that is quickly adopting Artificial Intelligence.
Machine learning algorithms are being developed and integrated in microscopes for autonomous operation and in software toolboxes for automatic analysis of large volumes of microscopy data.
The objective of the SPM4. 0 Doctoral Network is to train a new generation of researchers in the science and technology of autonomous Scanning Probe Microscopes powered by Artificial Intelligence for applications in the Life Science and Medical fields.
Doctoral Candidate Research Project:
- To establish a simulation framework for the construction of testbed data sets of scanning probe microscopy data.
- To represent multiparametric SPM images as high dimensional streams for incremental learning and anomaly detection.
- To perform anomaly detection with minimal supervision.
- To carry out method integration for cancer diagnostics with the multiparametric SPM data set cCellspmImageNet.
- To develop user-friendly post-processing autonomous SPM software.
Expected Results: Robust methodology to identify cancerous cells from multiparametric (topographic, mechanical, and electrical) SPM data.
User-friendly software environment to assist clinicians and researchers to post-process multiparametric SPM4. 0 data.
Planned secondments:
The PhD project includes three secondments at partner institutions to provide interdisciplinary training:
The first secondment will be hosted in Madrid, Spain, at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC).
The second secondment will take place in Dresden, Germany, at the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD).
The final secondment will be in Berlin, Germany, at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin (CUB).
Eligibility criteria: Applicants must be Doctoral Candidates , meaning they must not already hold a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment.
The Doctoral Candidate must comply with the mobility rule , meaning they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Italy for more than 12 months during the 36 months before the recruitment date.
The Doctoral Candidate will be offered a 36-month employment contract , including full employee benefits and inclusion in the social security schemes of the host country.
The candidate will also be enrolled in a 3-year PhD programme.
The gross salary will be approximately €32000, depending on the candidate's family status.
This amount includes the living allowance and an electronic meal voucher of €8, 00 for each day of effective work.
Additional allowances may include:
A gross mobility allowance for three years of around €21600 A gross family allowance for three years of around €17820, if applicable The candidate will work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary, and multisectoral environment, benefiting from secondments at other institutions within the SPM4. 0 Consortium.
Selection process: The selection procedure will be open, transparent, impartial, and equitable.
The selection will be based on the following criteria:
The candidates' scientific skills The relevance of their research experience The potential impact of the proposed training on their career A fair gender representation Ensuring no conflict of interest exists during the recruitment process Applications (in English) must include:
An updated CV (max 2 pages) A Letter of interest A detailed list of qualifications and publications Letters of support from 2 referees.
Shortlisted applicants will be given a brief assignment to assess their skills, problem-solving ability, and ability to apply their knowledge to relevant research questions.
The assignment must be completed and submitted within 10 days of being issued.
Applicants who successfully complete the assignment will be invited for remote interviews.
The selected candidate will be asked to provide a written acceptance of the PhD position via email.
