The ProjectThis exciting research opportunity, led by Prof. Marco Fontana within the Robotic Mechanisms and Materials (RMM) laboratory, focuses on developing innovative Fluid Gap Electrostatic Transducers for Robotics and Energy Harvesting.
These groundbreaking technologies—commonly referred to as HASEL, Electro Ribbon Actuators, or Dielectric Fluid Transducers—are redefining the landscape of robotics and energy harvesting systems. Our work aims to leverage the unique properties of fluid gap electrostatic actuators and generators to create adaptive and high-performance robotic systems.
By moving beyond rigid components and traditional electromagnetic motors, we are pioneering the use of functional soft and flexible materials in robotic mechanisms, enabling new frontiers in untethered, wearable, and portable robotics. What You'll DoThe successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team to:Explore the intersection of mechanics, materials science, and robotics. Contribute to the development of advanced robotic systems and energy generators that integrate fluid gap electrostatic technology. Conduct hands-on experimental work to design, prototype, and demonstrate novel devices. Who Should ApplyWe are looking for a passionate and motivated candidate with:A Master's degree (or equivalent) or PhD in engineering, physics, or related fields. A strong aptitude for independent research and practical problem-solving. Skills and enthusiasm for experimental work and the creation of functional prototypes. Proficiency in English, with excellent organizational and communication skills to collaborate effectively across disciplines.
