No Offer Description After years of oblivion, the topic of onomatopoeia (in a constellation that also includes phonosymbolism) is the object of renewed attention by linguistics.
From a philosophical and semiotic point of view, onomatopoeia raises the problem of the motivated relationship between sound and sense.
The pervasiveness of onomatopoeia, and of motivated phenomena, is now well established in languages.
However, the mechanism that leads from sound as an acoustic phenomenon to its phonological representation (through perception) has not been investigated, even if it represents the very condition of onomatopoeia.
The grant aims to define a model that represents the relationships between the (psycho-)acoustic domain and the (multiple) phonetic representations (broad/narrow) that can represent it in a given phonological system (for example, Italian).
The computational model will result in a prototype implementation.
