We invest heavily in basic research, concentrating on technological breakthroughs that drive the world forward.
We have more than 200, 000 employees, of which 55% are employed in R&D, and we operate in more than 170 countries and regions. Huawei invests more than 20% of revenues in R&D every year: in the past 10 years our total R&D investments exceed 150B USD. By the end of 2023, Huawei held +140, 000 active patents. The OpportunityHuawei Milan Research Center is seeking a skilled and innovative FSO (Free-Space Optics) System Engineer to join our dynamic R&D team.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, development, and testing of cutting-edge free-space optical communication systems.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of optical communication technologies, contributing to the development of high-speed, long-range communication systems for both terrestrial and satellite applications. Key ResponsibilitiesLead the design, simulation, and optimization of FSO communication systems, ensuring high performance and reliability. Perform system-level trade-off analyses to determine optimal system parameters (e. g. , link budget, aperture size, modulation schemes, and error correction). Conduct research to explore new FSO technologies, materials, and methods to improve system efficiency, data throughput, and signal quality. Develop system models and conduct simulations using tools such as VPI Photonics. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers, optical scientists, and software developers, to integrate FSO solutions into larger communication systems. Develop and execute test plans for laboratory and field trials to validate system performance, identify improvements, and troubleshoot issues. Provide technical leadership in system integration, ensuring FSO systems meet design specifications and customer requirements. Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in optical communication technologies and related fields (e. g. , quantum optics, laser physics, beamforming). Contribute to patent filings, technical papers, and publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Manage and/or support cooperation projects with academic partners. Required QualificationsMaster's degree or Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Proven experience in the design and analysis of FSO communication systems or optical communication systems. Proficiency with system modeling and simulation tools (e. g. , VPI Photonics). Strong understanding of optical components, such as lasers, detectors, beam steering mechanisms, lenses, and modulators. Experience with link budget analysis, optical alignment, and signal processing techniques used in FSO systems. Familiarity with environmental factors affecting FSO systems, such as weather, turbulence, and atmospheric absorption. Experience with optical system testing, performance validation, and troubleshooting in both lab and field environments. Knowledge of wireless communication protocols, data transmission, and error correction techniques. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred QualificationsExperience with the integration of FSO systems into large-scale communication networks. Familiarity with machine learning techniques applied to optical communications (e. g. , adaptive optics, beamforming). Experience with satellite communication systems or long-range point-to-point communication links. Published papers or patents in the field of optical communications or related technologies. Experience in a fast-paced, product-driven R&D environment. What We OfferWe offer you an exciting professional career in one of the leading and fastest growing multinational telecommunication companies, challenging work and a competitive salary package.
