Direct message the job poster from CREF - Enrico Fermi Research Center and Museum.
The Enrico Fermi Research Center (CREF) is located in the heart of Rome, in the same building where Enrico Fermi and his collaborators conducted pioneering experiments on neutron-induced radioactivity, which were key for the future development of nuclear energy.
Following the inspirational lead of Enrico Fermi, CREF aims to develop original and high-impact research lines based on physical methods with a strong interdisciplinary character.
Here, physicists collaborate on a daily basis with specialists in various fields: artificial intelligence, photonics, biology, medicine, social sciences, economics, and much more.
With its small and agile research structure, CREF can seize this strategic opportunity to be an institution that stimulates innovative scientific issues and face the complex challenges of our time.
The Computational Photonics Laboratory aims to experimentally demonstrate new computing machines that use light to accelerate the solution of combinatorial optimization problems and for hybrid electronic and photonic neural networks.
A further objective is to develop knowledge about the basic classical and quantum physics in these devices, through theories and numerical simulations.
Role Description This is a full-time temporary (2 years) position for a postdoctoral researcher in photonics, starting as a one-year contract with the option for renewal after the first year.
The contract will be a Research Fellowship (assegno di ricerca) with an yearly amount of €28, 000. 00, net of social security contributions to be paid by the administration (monthly salary is about €2, 000. 00).
The position will be part of the EU-PNRR research project Comp-SECOONDO and of the CREF project about Photonic Technology.
The focus of the research will be on optical computing and wave control in disordered nonlinear photonic media. The successful candidate will be based in Rome and participate daily in the activities of the computational photonics laboratory at CREF.
Remote working will also be considered if compatible with experiments and laboratory duties.
The researcher will study optical nonlinear phenomena (SHG, THG, PDC) in photonic media engineered with second-order nonlinearity (crystals and nanoparticles assemblies).
The study will explore applications of the observed nonlinear phenomena in the context of neuromorphic computing.
The primary goal is the experimental implementation of photonic neural networks and spatial photonic Ising machines (SPIM).
The researcher will design and implement experimental setups for wavefront shaping of laser light (CW, ultrafast fs pulses) by using spatial light modulators (SLMs), as well as develop Python to optimize and control the optical nonlinear interaction.
The research activity will also include the development of theoretical and/or numerical models for the description of physical phenomena of interest, the presentation of research results at international conferences, and the writing of scientific papers for publication in international journals.
The researcher will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment, collaborating with people with backgrounds in physics, engineering, data analysis, and AI.
The research activity will be directly supervised by Dr. Romolo Savo, permanent researcher at CREF and principal investigator of the EU-PNRR project funding the position.
Additional scientific reference will be Prof. Dr. Claudio Conti, coordinator of the Photonic technology project at CREF and full professor at University "La Sapienza".
In this context, the researcher will have continuous interaction with the broader environment of the Photonics group of "La Sapienza" University.
The research group activities will include group meetings, journal clubs, seminars, and participation at international conferences.
Qualifications The ideal candidate should have:
A PhD (preferred) in physics, optics/photonics, engineering, computer science or equivalent qualifications. Experience in optical computing, deep learning, light scattering, disordered photonic media, nonlinear optics. Proficiency in data analysis and Python coding. Good verbal and written communication skills (in English) and the ability to work in an international research team and collaborate with partners at other research institutions and/or industry. Ability to work well in a team, manage multiple tasks with flexibility, and adapt to changing priorities. Track record of scientific publications and presentations at national and international conferences. Application The position is part of a public selection.
The relative application form can be found at.
Application deadline is on January 31, 2025. Contact ****** for further information or in case you need supervision for the official application procedure.
