Professional Tutors work with students in a variety of formats on course content, including help with homework assignments and preparing for tests and quizzes, with a special concentration on learning the basic skills needed to master course content.
It is the goal of the tutor to assist students in developing the learning skills necessary to master the academic subject matter.
Tutors may work in a variety of ways, including embedded within a class on campus or online, open walk-in times, and online tutoring.
The tutor will work one-on-one or with a small group of students and document their interactions.
Tutors will also be asked to create and facilitate success workshops covering topics related to their tutoring field dependent on the courses that relate to their subject area.
Professional tutors will be expected to lead the field of professional development, with continuing education and presenting at trainings and meetings. This position will be 80% online, with 20% of work on campus - safe at work guidelines must be followed. Job Duties:Create and maintain relationships with key faculty members per course divisionSeek out and engage in professional development opportunities – 4 hours per semesterRespect the Gateway Student Code of Conduct at all timesAct as content liaison, representing the needs of all tutors in specified subjectEngage in and maintain prompt communication with the coordinator and teamMaintain a positive and welcoming attitude with students, regardless of their frustrations and/or demeanorBe on time, present, and prepared for every scheduled tutoring sessionExhibit signs of active listeningPromote success and give positive encouragement to students for objectives reachedMaintain confidential relationships between tutor and studentRemain professional at all times, exhibiting professional dress standards and professionalism with technologyUse resources and refer when necessaryConsult with the Coordinator on difficult students' progress and any reportable circumstancesParticipate in all training sessions and required professional developmentReach out to students referred to tutoringReport accurately all hours worked on the appropriate electronic payroll forms and submit by deadlines (15th and 30th of each month)Other duties as assignedMinimum Qualifications:Associate's degree, or two (2) years or more of full-time college coursework equivalent requiredTutors must demonstrate competencies in the courses for which they wish to tutorCumulative GPA of 3. 0 or higher required from a previously obtained degree2 recommendations from previous faculty members or supervisorsPatience, kindness, dependability, and a strong interest in helping othersStrong interpersonal communication skillsDemonstrated ability to effectively communicate and reiterate course contentPrior tutoring experience – at least 1 semester or 5 months of experience from another university or organizationUnderstanding of subject matter relevant to students' needsUnderstanding of Gateway student population and needs presentedCommitment to diversity, equity, and inclusionExperience in and understanding of the importance of working with students from diverse populationsExcellent organizational skills; high attention to detail; independent; self-motivated; able to work in a fast-paced, changing environmentExcellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with many individuals at all levels throughout the internal college environment as well as external business and community partners, representing him/herself in a professional and courteous mannerAbility to communicate clearly verbally and in writingAbility to multi-task, work under deadlines, and prioritize projects to meet deadlines with high levels of efficiency and accuracyMust have proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)Preferred Qualifications:Experience in and understanding of the importance of working with students from diverse populationsExperience working at the community college levelAbout Us:Gateway Community and Technical College is located in Northern Kentucky - part of the Greater Cincinnati Region and is Northern Kentucky's only public, accredited, comprehensive two-year institution.
