Position Context The R&D Packaging Engineer EMEA role is based in the Campari Group HQ in Sesto San Giovanni (Milano) at the European Technical Center of Gruppo Campari.
R&D Packaging Engineer is responsible for the design, development and manufacture of packaging for Campari products' portfolio.
Mission Develop new packaging products in response to Marketing Innovation briefs Execute packaging re-styling activities for existing products Keep up to date with technological innovations and develop new packaging innovations that unlock new areas of opportunity for Campari Group.
Ensure appropriate product development approach, enabling concept intent to be effectively transferred in to mass production and ensure that products meet set requirements and specifications Lead and coordinate design efforts between internal teams and outside vendors to develop optimal packaging solutions Provide Effective Technical support to Operations, Marketing, Procurement and Sales organizations Lead the effort to identify areas for improvement in packaging machinery and methods, reduction of waste and improvement in cost savings through brainstorming and analysis Develop outer packaging and shippable containers reducing shipping costs, ensuring undamaged product and minimizing waste for consumers.
Key Responsibilities The primary responsibilities of the role will include:
Contribute to development briefs, specifically in the preparation of technical content and constraints.
Define realistic project timelines with key stakeholders, monitor progress and adherence to the timeline through to launch.
Lead the definition and selection of appropriate manufacturing processes and assembly operations.
Must be able to influence the decisions of the project leaders to maximize industrial efficiency.
Lead initial cost evaluations and assist in the preparation of final COGS and Capex.
Design Approval Test Protocol and Define critical test protocol and lead the qualification of the final solution, verifying adherence to targets and confirming functionality is 'fit for purpose'.
Evaluate vendor prototypes and providing improvements/suggestions or alternative solutions Ensure and Assess Food safety and Compliance of packaging materials used Develop and Maintain accurate Technical Product Specifications for packaging materials and Ensure that technical product specs are appropriately documented.
Ensure products are launched on time, and that operating efficiencies, quality and scrap rates are within pre-defined limits.
Manage production start-up and post launch phase.
Provide technical assistance for managing complaints/issues and dealing with suppliers Advise senior management on the latest packaging trends and optimal solutions.
Drive continuous improvements and saving projects.
Lead and coordinate Business continuity and Manufacturing footprint projects Ensure and assess Sustainability topics in new projects Key Relationships Internal: Marketing Managers / Supply Chain Directors, Production Team, Engineering, Factory Management Team, European Quality Team, Procurement, Global R&D, Global Quality
External: Suppliers, Co-manufacturers, Design Agencies, Laboratories, Research Centres
Summary of Experience and Key Skills A minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in a similar role within the high-speed bottling, beverage - spirits or food manufacturing industry.
Outstanding technical capability with a proven track record of project management and delivery Outstanding creative problem solving and multitasking skills Good understanding of quality tools including RCA, AQL's, CPK analysis and SPC.
Ability to work under pressure, set clear priorities and meet deadlines.
Good negotiating and influencing skills with the ability to align the different interests of internal parties.
International mindset, ability to think across functional boundaries and to develop a commercial understanding of corporate and operational business issues.
Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and oral.
Must have outstanding team work ability Must have a very good knowledge of English language, Italian and a third language being a plus Flexible to travel extensively both domestically and internationally.
Education / Professional Qualifications BSc/MSc University from a Packaging School/Material science or Industrial Design of consumer goods or Industrial engineering Functional knowledge of food contact materials A postgraduate packaging technology qualification can be beneficial, particularly for candidates without a directly relevant first degree.
