Description of the Research Activity: In the European forests, an ongoing spread of evergreen broad-leaved species has been reported, and global changes have been indicated as drivers of this phenomenon. This project aims to understand the spatio-temporal magnitude, diversity, and drivers of this phenomenon with a latitudinal study encompassing evergreen woody species-rich and -poor areas at the transition between the Mediterranean and Temperate forest vegetation. In collaboration with experts in remote sensing of the environment at the University of Innsbruck, the main project goal is to explore and study the spread of evergreen species by combining vegetation observations collected in natural parks and archived in databases with satellite images. The activities required from the candidate include sampling planning, fieldwork, data analysis, and scientific writing for international journals.
