Researcher In Cancer And Radiation Biology
Researcher in cancer and radiation biology The Department of Molecular Biosciences, Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) conducts experimental basic research in molecular cell biology, integrative biology and infection and immune biology.
The research environment is characterized by a modern and advanced methodology and has a strong international profile.
MBW is one of the larger departments of the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University with more than 30 research groups and about 200 employees, of whom 65 are doctoral students.

Project description The position will be associated with the EU-funded project MIRAMARE (mechanisms of the inversed relationship between menarche age and radiation-induced breast and endometrial cancers) which is supported by the European Partnership for Radiation Protection Research PIANOFORTE.
The project aims at elucidating the mechanisms responsible for the inversed relationship between menarche age and the risk of radiation-induced breast and endometrial cancer.
A factor responsible for early menarche age is obesity.
It is possible that the inversed correlation between menarche age and cancer results from the interaction of obesity-related factors, sex hormones and radiation.
The aim of MIRAMARE is to test this hypothesis by using in vitro cell model systems.
The project is a collaboration between partners from France, Italy, Poland and the UK.
Main responsibilities The position involves application of cell culture and molecular biology techniques to analyse DNA damage and repair induced by radiation in combination with sex and obesity hormones.
Analyses will include fluorescent microscopy of painted chromosomes.
All exposure facilities are installed at Stockholm University.
Involvement in work funded by other relevant projects may also constitute a part of the work.
The selected person will also participate in running a course in radiation biology and cellular toxicology.
Qualification requirements Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country in the field of radiation biology, cell biology, molecular biology or similar areas.
Experience from work with normal or cancer breast cell lines is highly advantageous, as well as previous work in the field of radiation biology and cancer biology.
Experience with techniques to measure DNA damage and repair (gammaH2AX focus assay, comet assay, chromosomal aberration and micronucleus test) as well as cell death assays (apoptosis, clonogenic cell survival) is regarded as an asset.
Additional merits include the use of methods such as real time qPCR and Western blotting.
Assessment criteria In the appointment process, attention will be given to research skills and work experience as specified in the qualification requirements.
Terms of employment This is a full-time, indefinite-term position with a six-month trial period.
Start date 2025-02-01 or as per agreement.
