Center for Climate Change and Transformation
Short description of the position:
The position is open within the Center for Climate Change and Transformation, a new interdisciplinary platform created in Eurac Research to bring together the expertise and experience of all the institutes that are working on climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies at all levels and in different geographical areas at national and international scale.
**Tasks**:
- Contribute to a monitoring campaign using mobile weather sensors to measure meteorological parameters in the city of Bolzano and close surroundings in summer and winter. This will include coordinating data collection and developing specific procedures for the data quality check and assimilation.
- Carry out analyses of the collected data to improve the representation of the local thermal gradients, support the assessment of the urban heat island effect and investigate connections with potential impacts.
- Contribute to the Spoke "DS Climate" with the development of future heat-related hazard scenarios for the urban scale and their integration into the assessment of local adaptation and mitigation options; this will include the generation of new observation datasets of key climate variables, the integration of multiple data sources (in-situ, remote sensing, large-scale climate model outputs), the processing of climate data and projections through bias-adjustment and downscaling, the calculation and assessment of climate-related hazard indicators for present and future.
- Collaborate with the Spoke "TS1 Urban" enabling the integration of elaborated climate information into the assessment of urban climate risks, especially related to heatwaves, and the modelling of energy consumption and efficiency in the urban environment.
- Participate in internal and external project meetings, discuss results with project partners and in national and international conferences. Write project reports and scientific publications. **Requirements**:
- MSc in environmental sciences (e. g. meteorology, environmental engineering, environmental sciences, and similar) with a strong background in climate and environmental monitoring.
- Experience in statistical modelling of climate and related hazards and assessment, ideally in the urban context.
- Experience in climate and weather data post-processing, including quality checks and spatial interpolation.
- Experience in the modelling of urban climate is desirable.
- Proficient use of programming environments (R, Python)
- Experience in manipulating large data volumes and multi-dimensional data (e. g. , netCDF files) through dedicated software (e. g. CDO, NCO)
- Proficient knowledge of Italian and English (C1)
