About Nerviano Medical Sciences (NMS) Nerviano Medical Sciences (NMS) is a leading oncology-focused R&D company in Europe, dedicated to discovering and developing novel cancer therapies.
Located in the Nerviano BioPark, near Milan, NMS combines biotech agility with big pharma quality standards, focusing on early-stage drug discovery and partnering assets for further development and commercialization.
Our innovative pipeline of small molecules targets key oncology pathways, and we aim to develop first- and best-in-class therapies that bring significant improvements to patients' lives.
As part of our expanding team, we are seeking a Medicinal Chemistry Scientist or Associate Scientist to support our growing oncology portfolio and contribute to the discovery of novel drug candidates.
Mission of the Role The Medicinal Chemistry Scientist / Associate Scientist will be a core member of our discovery team, designing and synthesizing small molecules to support early-stage drug discovery programs.
The role involves working in close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including biologists, pharmacologists, and computational chemists, to optimize drug-like properties and deliver high-quality leads for oncology targets.
The mission is to apply cutting-edge medicinal chemistry techniques, state-of-the-art synthetic methodologies, and advanced structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis to drive innovative research programs toward clinical development.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the discovery of new cancer therapies and work in a fast-paced, science-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities 1.
Design and Synthesis of Novel Molecules Design and synthesize complex small molecules for drug discovery programs, focusing on improving potency, selectivity, and pharmacokinetic properties. Develop and execute multi-step synthetic routes, scaling synthesis from milligram to gram quantities. 2.
Structure-Activity and Structure-Property Relationship Analysis Collaborate with internal teams to analyze SAR and SPR data, providing insights to refine and optimize lead compounds. Incorporate feedback from biological assays and pharmacology studies to drive rational drug design. 3.
Data Management and Reporting Maintain accurate and detailed records of experimental procedures and results in an electronic laboratory notebook. Present findings in internal project meetings, external conferences, and scientific publications. 4.
Collaboration and Cross-Functional Integration Work closely with computational chemistry, biology, and ADME teams to advance projects and achieve milestones. Contribute to multidisciplinary project teams, offering chemical insights and strategic recommendations. 5.
Innovation and Technology Integration Stay up-to-date with emerging synthetic methodologies and medicinal chemistry tools. Identify and integrate innovative technologies to improve the efficiency of hit and lead discovery programs. Ideal Candidate Profile Education & Experience PhD in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or related field, with 0–3 years of relevant experience in multi-step organic synthesis or drug discovery, orMaster's degree in Chemistry with at least 3 years of experience in multi-step synthesis of complex molecules, preferably in an industry setting. Skills & Technical Expertise Strong expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, with hands-on experience in developing synthetic routes for complex molecules. Proficiency in NMR and LC-MS characterization techniques. Familiarity with contemporary medicinal chemistry concepts, including drug design strategies and SAR analysis. Experience with hit-to-lead optimization and early-stage drug discovery is a plus. Personal Traits Creative and solution-oriented thinker with a passion for chemistry and drug discovery. Highly collaborative, able to thrive in a multidisciplinary environment and contribute to shared success. Strong communication skills, capable of articulating complex concepts to diverse audiences. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills. Adaptable and proactive, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. What is There for You? This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a world-class oncology research organization, contributing directly to the discovery of new cancer therapies.
