Sr Director And Lead Counsel, Emea
Position Summary**:
The Sr Director & Lead Counsel is responsible for leading, developing and implementing the legal strategy, policies and procedures for the Thermo Fisher Scientific's EMEA Legal team. Leading a team of cross jurisdiction legal professionals, she/he will be responsible for all legal aspects of operations for businesses in the EMEA region.
The Sr Director & Lead Counsel will provide senior management with effective advice on company strategies and their implementation, manage the legal team, oversee all legal compliance and regulatory requirements and oversee the work of outside counsel. The Sr Director & Lead Counsel will be directly involved in complex business transactions, in partnership with Division and Group legal and compliance colleagues and will liaise with Thermo Fisher Scientific corporate functions that provide support for litigation, labor, compliance, risk management and intellectual property matters.
The Sr Director & Lead Counsel will report directly to the VP and General Counsel (International) and will be a member of their legal leadership team.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Lead, manage and guide a high-performing team of in-house lawyers and staff to implement Company goals and protect extensive investments across assigned businesses.
- Work with business leaders to set and implement appropriate legal strategies to achieve business objectives, pro-actively identifying emerging risk and opportunity areas and advising senior management on same. Work effectively within the organization to connect resources to address challenges of diverse scope and complexity.
- Set commercial legal strategy and company-wide standards and processes regarding a range of legal and business issues.
- Work with legal leadership in setting functional culture, development of talent, and budget. Ensure appropriate staffing level and staff training and development plans are established to support business needs.
- Explore and evaluate continual process improvement to provide efficient and effective commercial legal support and risk management. Pro-active in driving improved efficiency of operations. Lead and guide team in implementation of same and structure work in cost effective manner.
- Select, evaluate and manage the use of external counsel, vendors and advisors as needed.
**Qualifications**:
- Intellectually strong lawyer with at least 15 years' experience in sophisticated commercial legal work, including at least 10 years' in-house experience in global operating companies.
- Experienced people leader with at least five years of experience developing and leading high performing teams of attorneys and legal professionals. This leader sets a high bar for performance and develops others in their wake.
- Solid experience of working with a business-legal approach and cross-functional teams. Ability to navigate complex and ambiguous environments with intelligent risk taking. Can align and influence through direct and indirect authority, and communicates effectively across teams, functions, and regions.
- Solution oriented with innate good judgment, strong but diplomatic presence, customer centric, robust and enthusiastic self-starter, flexible mindset. Strong negotiating and influencing skills, with an ability to lead and influence at all levels.
- Ability to develop practical processes/approaches and to drive solutions to completion, including initiatives to enhance efficiency, quality and productivity. Experience with resource prioritization and developing/managing a budget.
- A strong scientific background is recommended and substantial experience in technology businesses in the life sciences sector
- Exceptional oral and written communications skills. Strong sense of ethics and integrity.
- Fluent in spoken and written English (additional language(s) an advantage).
- Legal degree (Bachelor's, JD or international equivalent) from an accredited law school and a member in good standing with the bar; licensed to practice law
