Sterile Processing Technician
**Place of Performance**: Naples Italy
**General Description**:
Sterile Processing Technician shall be responsible for all aspects of the Sterile Processing Division (SPD) from daily operations to resolving problems that arise to meet the mission.
Work assignment for Main Operating Room and Dental Clinic include but are not limited to the following: decontamination, high level disinfection (HLD), instrument and set preparation, facilitation of equipment maintenance and disposition, and supply ordering and storage.
Determines, adjusts, maintains, and applies proper processing procedures for the full range of dental and surgical supplies and equipment used in the hospital including all clinics.
**Specific Tasks**:
- **Assurance Testing
a) Perform daily, quarterly, and unplanned quality assurance testing within the Central Sterile Processing Department as identified in the Department SOP.
Requires precise documentation of logs for all tests to maintain the highest standards of infection control and sterility assurance.
Interprets test results, takes appropriate action based on results and maintains appropriate log entries of test to include Tosi Test, Bowie-Dick, Biological Monitoring, DryHeat Spore test.
b) Performs a full range of duties to provide management controls as well as personal intervention to process, decontaminate, prepare, and distribute dental instruments and dental equipment.
Judgement is required for recognizing borderline situations, and instrument malfunctions.
Uses judgement to recognize and react to indicators of malfunction (e. g.
instrument malfunctions, reaction system) and evaluates validity of data in relation to the test system.
Exercise proper judgement to notify and report to Department Head and Chain of Command when test or machinery indicates a failure in the disinfecting and sterility process.
- **Assembly and Inspection
a) Receive, disassemble, and inspect for damage reusable dental and surgical instrumentation.
Assembles andprepares a full range of dental instrument trays and sets used in general and specialized dentistry for propersterilization utilizing inventory sheets.
Selects and utilizes correct wrapping or packaging material for dental devicesand surgical instrument sets selects and implements sterilization process in accordance with standard dental andsurgical procedures to include steam and dry-heat sterilization in accordance with the manufacturer's validatedinstructions for use for reprocessing.
Correctly labels, seals, wraps, or places instrument cassettes and trays itemswith appropriate chemical indicator tape.
Conducts quarterly inspections and inventories on dental handpieces, surgical equipment, and cassettes, identifying items that are past life expectancy and requesting replacements via theclinic supply department.
- **Decontamination
a) Determine and implement the correct method of decontamination of bioburden and other potentially infectious material (OPIM).
Decontamination methods shall include wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, lubrication (when indicated), ultrasonic, and washer disinfector.
Receive and dispose of regulated medical waste and general waste in compliance with OSHA standards.
All medical waste will be packaged/bagged and labeled within the department of origin and delivered to the designated area for disposal.
Responsible for communicating with the point of contact identified within the command and/or following the Standard Operating Procedure to coordinate the time and date of medical waste pickup/disposal.
Shall ensure the process is properly documented.
- **Sterilization
a) Examine all items after decontamination/pre-sterilization procedures to ensure that gross contaminants have been removed and that instruments function properly.
Ensure that all instruments used in general and specialized dentistry, implant specialty instrumentation, and surgical instrumentation are properly labeled and identified.
Receive sterilized trays, sets, and equipment from the sterilizer; check for integrity of sterilization, i. e.
color changes on indicator tapes, external and internal indicators, and dampness of packages; stock and properly store sterile items in the sterile storage room in accordance with standard dental procedures.
Ensure that all clinic dental and surgical instrumentation are properly labeled and identified by monitoring the procedures established within the Surgical and Dental Directorates.
Secure instruments in SPD suite until results of biologic monitoring support that sterilization was achieved.
- **Training
b) Provide training to newly reporting staff members to include active duty, civilian, and contract employees on clinic infection control guidelines, practices, and daily processes.
c) Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
- You will be traveling between health care facilities.
