Thesis proposal: Study and Optimization of the Alkaline Electrolyzer for the Production of Hydrogen through Dynamic Simulation in Modelica based software.
The Centre for Sustainable Energy is looking for a young student interested in carrying out a master's thesis experience with the title: "Study and Optimization of the Alkaline Electrolyzer for the Production of Hydrogen through Dynamic Simulation in Modelica based software".
The alkaline electrolyser represents a high TRL technology of fundamental importance for the sustainable production of hydrogen, a key element for numerous industrial processes, for the development of innovative energy solutions and for supporting the energy transition of today's society.
This master's thesis aims to conduct an exhaustive study on the alkaline electrolyser, focusing on the analysis of various innovative technological solutions available to improve its efficiency, yield, reliability and scalability. The main objective will be to support the definition of an optimized Balance of Plant (BoP) for the alkaline electrolyser, considering several key factors such as energy efficiency, dynamic behavior, system lifetime and environmental impact. To this end, extensive research will be conducted on the latest technologies and methodologies in the field of alkaline electrolysis.
A fundamental aspect of this research will be the optimization of space occupied and yield in the production of hydrogen for industrial processes. Different operational scenarios and plant configurations will be considered in order to identify the most efficient and scalable solution.
Planned activities Activities include defining the control strategy for the alkaline electrolyzer. Different control loops will be identified and implemented through the Modelica language, using PID (Proportional-Integrative-Derivative) architectures. These control loops will be designed to ensure optimal system operation, maximizing efficiency, renewable energy absorption and minimizing system energy consumption. The research activity will be supported by the use of a dynamic simulation tool in Modelica language. This tool will be used to create all the components of the BoP and to implement the different PID architectures for the control loops identified in the control strategy definition and in the Process and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID).
Through this master's thesis, we aim not only to provide a detailed overview of the most innovative technologies and methodologies in the field of alkaline electrolysis, but also to propose practical and optimized solutions for the integration of these technologies into industrial processes.
Requirements Enrolled in master's degree in energy Engineering, or equivalent; Good knowledge of physics; Good knowledge of modelling dynamic and steady state and optimization; Basic programming skills.
