Bozen/Bolzano Internship Institute for Alpine Environment The Eurac-Institute for Alpine Environment performs problem-oriented research on the conflicting priorities of ecology and economy in mountain regions.

For the project "Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol" (BMS), we invite applications for the position of intern in the field of ornithology (main topic: bird diversity and automated recordings).

Besides profound knowledge of the alpine bird fauna, the ideal candidate has gained experience in biodiversity surveys and experience or interest with automated devices.

The investigation area will be the whole region of South Tyrol (ITA), working location is Bolzano/Bozen.

BMS is an ongoing survey of biodiversity that serves as basic research, but it is also intended to provide a scientific base for political decisions concerning spatial planning, agriculture, and nature conservation.

BMS surveys animal and plant groups that react sensitively to climate and/or land-use changes, at habitat and landscape level.

These surveys occur in 320 sites distributed over the entire province of South Tyrol (7400 km2), including a large share of the diversity of habitats in the region.

Tasks: Support in bird surveys by means of point count.

Support in bird surveys by means of automated recordings (e. g. , devices installation and collection, data management and manipulation).

Support in digitalization and management of ornithological field data.

Support in vocal detection and data implementation of registered bird data.

First analyses of assessed ornithological data and eco/bioacoustics data.

Requirements: Bachelor's or master's degree in biology or Environmental Sciences (or similar, obtained not more than one year ago).

Willingness and availability to work in alpine areas.

Good knowledge of the bird fauna of South Tyrol and the Alps.

Experiences in biodiversity monitoring programs is advantageous.

Knowledge in bird voices is advantageous.

Experience in automated monitoring is advantageous.

Good English skills; additional skills in German and Italian are advantageous.

Basic statistical knowledge; knowledge in R/Python, and AI are advantageous.

Good interpersonal and collaborative skills to integrate in a working group and to interact with associated researchers from various institutions and with stakeholders.

Efficient organization skills.
