Trainee (Msc Student) In Biological Sciences / Biotechnology For The Characterization Of 3-Dime[]
The Institute for Biomedicine, located at Bolzano's NOI Techpark, is a key component of Eurac Research, dedicated to improving health through precision prevention research. This interdisciplinary effort seeks to predict, slow or preempt illness progression by understanding genetic, biological, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Utilizing a decade-long population study in collaboration with the South Tyrolean Healthcare Service, the institute offers access to extensive data and biological materials suitable for such research. With a focus on neurological, cardiovascular, and metabolic health, the team employs state-of-the-art labs and innovative management to span the full translational research cycle, from data generation to potential clinical application. In its focus area "Molecular Neurodegeneration, " the Translational Genomics group is looking for a Master thesis student to work on 3D organoid models for Parkinson's disease (PD). Specifically, the team investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms that are implicated in the onset of PD and identifies novel targets for therapy. To do so, we also develop more appropriate models in which to perform the experimental work. Recently, we have made strong efforts in generating 3-dimensional brain organoids from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), both derived from PD patients and also modified via genetic engineering to manipulate PD-relevant genes. The selected candidate will join a project focused on the characterization of brain organoids at the biochemical and cellular level to best understand their physiology and alterations in models of PD. The position is open for students preparing their Master thesis (cell biology, biotechnology, neuroscience, or related disciplines) for a period of 10 months. Tasks: The student will gain practical experience in scientific work by performing experimental work and data analysis. The experimental part will include: iPSC culture Differentiation of iPSCs into 3D brain organoids Real-time PCR and Western blot Biochemical assays Requirements: Molecular and cellular biology basics Experience in cell culture work as well as in basic molecular laboratory techniques Previous experience in iPSC culture and differentiation will be an advantage Good knowledge of English; knowledge of either German or Italian language is an advantage Well-developed social skills, a hands-on attitude, and ability to work in a team Willingness to develop new skills and explore novel ideas We offer: A position for a 10-month project in the laboratory of the Institute for Biomedicine. The beginning of the internship will be as soon as possible and will be discussed with the selected candidate. International environment and engaged colleagues Training in a broad range of cell and molecular biology techniques Internship compensation How to apply: Interested candidates should submit their application (CV, cover letter, and further relevant documents) by 21. 03. 2025.
